The 9,000 villagers who live in the mountain areas we work require more services
and more frequent care than we can currently provide with our medical bus. This
area is about 35 minutes north of San Lucas, a 20 minute-drive off the main highway
on a dirt road in poor condition. That's about 45 minutes from Antigua and about
90 minutes north of the capital city of  Guatemala City.

Over the last three years during which we've provided medical care to the rural
mountain villagers, we’ve come to better appreciate the dire and seemingly hopeless
situation in which these poor but precious people live. We now realize the need to
be more involved in their lives, provide a great deal of health education, and the
need to provide more services, help and hope.

We want to address more health issues to provide some long-term solutions. At
present there is no dental care available in these rural villages. The practice of using
poorly trained midwives while mothers give birth on the dirt floors of cornstalk
shacks is responsible for many deaths.

For these reasons, we’ve decided to build a full-service medical center in the tiny
village located in the center of our service area, easily accessible to the people in
the area. We've already purchased the land and we’re now under construction
with a scheduled occupancy date of April 15th.

This center will be able to provide medical exams, medicine, minor surgery,
dentistry, a birthing room and a large room for meetings and seminars.

We plan to use the meeting room for teaching health care through live seminars,
guest speakers and videos. We'll also do counseling, teach midwife skills, hold
seminars and show videos (in Spanish and in Catchiquel, the local native dialect)

COST

The total cost for this medical center is $26,000, including the land and the medical
and dental equipment we need. We currently have most of this, but we have
faith that the money will come in as we need it, so we have gone ahead and now the

Clinic is completed, it was quite a "stepping out in faith" as they say!

please send an email to

We'd be like to hear from anyone who is interested in contributing
towards this project, anyone with ideas on how to raise funds and,
anyone who would like to come here to help build or provide
medical service. We are also seeking medical professionals who
would be willing to commit to a minimum of six months of service
here in Guatemala.
